About Blijdorp Penguins

At Diergaarde Blijdorp, technology sometimes gets a second life. This was also the case for the three projectors that had served in the lion enclosure for years. When the enclosure was redesigned and the projectors became redundant, the idea arose to repurpose them for the penguins. But how do you integrate old projectors into a completely new setting?

The solution was found in a hallway next to the penguin enclosure. Here, the three projectors would together create an immersive projection: an icy snowstorm in which penguins steadfastly endure the cold, while wind and snowflakes subtly guide visitors in the right direction.

Our team was tasked with designing these visuals. With great care, we created an animation where the perspective aligned perfectly as soon as visitors entered the hallway. On the right side, the penguins stood still, surrounded by heavy snowfall, while the storm blew in the same direction as the visitors' walking path.

On-site, we precisely aligned the projectors and blended the visuals seamlessly, ensuring a smooth transition. The result is now a wintery experience that transports visitors into the world of the penguin
